36. Bradford, John; Cowen, Sir Zelman (foreword) (2000). In the Highest Traditions: RAN Heroism Darwin 19 February 1942 (1st ed). Adelaide, Henley Beach: Seaview Press. 224 pp. Paperback small trade, very good condition, black & white photos, figures, tables, minor edgewear. This book lists all names and citations for Australian military personnel recommended for gallantry awards in the first air raid on Darwin - some are published for the first time. If the Japanese had included torpedo bombers in their strike force, 1000 RAN, Merchant Navy and US Army personnel could have been killed. The absence of torpedo bombers and dive bombers in subsequent raids on Darwin was a factor in the loss of HMAS Armidale in December 1942. The author located other records relating to the Darwin air raid while researching for this book. These records do not relate to gallantry per se, as they do not appear in other texts covering the raid. However, they are of important historical value. ISBN/ASIN: 1740080750. Our Book No: 40929. $30 AUD.

Quaritch's Letter did contain some errors, mostly the result of assumptions common at the time or deficiencies of knowledge unremedied until later. It demonstrated, correctly, that the folio in question was printed at Barcelona in 1493 and that all other known editions of the Columbus Letter followed it. This was a service to his firm and to the Lenox Library (now part of the New York Public Library), which purchased the item. Sydney: Allen & Unwin. 258 pp. Paperback octavo, very good condition, black & white photos centre spread, corner tip front cover creased, bottom edge rubbed, minimal edgewear & creasing. The Japanese bombing raid on Darwin, on 19 February 1942, was the first wartime assault on Australian soil. The Japanese struck with the same carrier-borne force that devastated Pearl Harbor only ten weeks earlier. There was a difference: more bombs fell on Darwin, more civilians were killed, and more ships were sunk. The people of Darwin abandoned their town, leaving it to looters, a few anti-aircraft batteries, and a handful of dogged defenders with single-shot rifles. Yet the story has remained in the shadows. Drawing on long-hidden documents and first-person accounts, Grose tells what really happened. There was much to be proud of in Darwin that day: courage, mateship, determination and improvisation. But the dark side of the story involves looting, desertion and a calamitous failure of leadership. (1 of 2 available copies.). ISBN/ASIN: 9781741756432. Our Book No: 15138. $14 AUD.

London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson. 257 pp. Hardback octavo, dustjacket, very good plus condition (in very good plus dustjacket). This novel by Diana Souhami is based on the mutiny on the Bounty and weaves facts with fiction. At dawn in 1789 Fletcher Christian, master's mate on the HMS Bounty, took a coconut to quench his thirst from the supply on the quarterdeck. But the consequences followed: mutiny, and Captain Bligh's navigation 3000 miles across the Pacific in an open boat in violent weather without maps or supplies and with starving men. The colonising of Pitcairn Island. The shipwreck on the Great Barrier Reef of HMS Pandora sent to capture the mutineers. And, 200 years later, the seduction of the narrator in a rudderless yacht on stormy seas. This singular tale by a Whitbread Prize-winning writer connects the famous mutiny on the Bounty in the Pacific Ocean in 1789 to the plight of the islanders of Pitcairn now. Its conceptual core is chaos theory: how a small chance thing, the taking of a coconut by Fletcher Christian from Bligh's stores on the ship, had dramatic ramifications that continue today. Reed), and a Bibliography of eyewitness accounts of the first year of settlement. (A limited edition of 500 copies.). ISBN/ASIN: 0958847800. Our Book No: 41304. $50 AUD.
