1. Abdel-Magied, Yassmin (2016). Yassmin's Story: Who Do You Think I Am? (1st ed). Sydney, North Sydney: Penguin Random House Australia. 322 pp. Paperback octavo, good condition, colour photos, spine little creased, corner tips covers scuffed, minor edgewear. This book is about a Sudanese-Egyptian-Australian Muslim woman. This is a story about growing up migrant and Muslim in Australia post 9/11, navigating the usual teenage dramas, on top of adjusting to now being seen as the face of the 'enemy'. New York: Cambridge University Press (CUP). 356 pp. Paperback octavo, very good condition, figures, front cover little creased, bottom edge little rubbed, minor edgewear. How did humankind deal with the extreme challenges of the last Ice Age? How have the relatively benign post-Ice Age conditions affected the evolution and spread of humanity across the globe? He reviews the aspects of our physiology and intellectual development that have been influenced by climatic factors, and how features of our lives - diet, language, domestication of animals - are also the product of the climate in which we evolved. To summarize: climate change in prehistory has made us what we are today. Coal mining in Australia followed settlement in 1788, as fortuitously Sydney was at the centre of the Sydney Coal Basin. The illustrations are from all important areas, depicting historical, technological, industrial and social conditions and events sourced from all corners of Australia. Con Martin was born in Ballarat, and spent his life in the mining industry, and he visited overseas a number of times, spreading his reputation worldwide and earning him the Institute Medal and the Order of Australia. This book is his final job. Con died without seeing the fruits of this work which bears his name. (No 21 in this AIMM Monograph series.). ISBN/ASIN: 0949106909. Our Book No: 29312. $80 AUD.

153. Manning, Paddy (2013). What the Frack? Everything You Need to Know About Coal Seam Gas. Sydney, Kensington: New South QuickEs. 188 pp. Paperback trade, very good plus condition. Australia's coal seam gas industry in rural New South Wales and Queensland carries unprecedented toxic environmental risks, but it could be the path to energy salvation by being cleaner than coal, safer than nuclear energy, and a complement to renewables. A balanced examination of both sides of the argument. While big oil and gas companies believe Australia could be the biggest liquid natural gas exporter in the world, farmers and environmentalists are united in their opposition to coal seam gas extraction from Australia's most fertile agricultural lands. Do coal seam gas wells poison our food resources? Does coal seam gas really aid in tackling climate change? Visiting drill sites, boardrooms, pipelines, parliamentary offices, and farm gate protests, the author demonstrates how coal seam gas extraction may be one boom that is happening too fast. Chicago: University of Chicago Press. 228 pp. Hardback small octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), figures, maps, minor edgewear jacket. Rising sea levels pose major challenges to all aspects of coastal existence - economic, residential, and environmental - but also to cartography (mapping of coasts). Coastlines challenge mapmakers to capture on paper a highly irregular land-water boundary perturbed by tides and storms and complicated by rocks, wrecks, and shoals. Peppered with captivating anecdotes about the frustrating effort to expunge fictitious islands from nautical charts, the tricky measurement of a coastline’s length, and the contentious notions of beachfront property and public access. the author is professor of geography at Syracuse University. Thomas Griffith Taylor (1880 - 1963) was a geographer, anthropologist and world explorer. They explain what drove this 'long, lean, lanky' man to such extremes: geographically, intellectually and politically. His travels took him from Captain Scott's final expedition in Antarctica to every continent on earth. In a life that stretched from the Boer War to the Cold War, he sought to enlighten the public on the human relation to the environment. As a geographer whose work crossed into anthropology, he courted controversy and craved recognition. Today's preoccupations with climate change, the ascendancy of Asian nations, and the renewed threat of nuclear war, were all addressed by Taylor generations earlier.
