Facsimile edition. Diamonds and Toads is a translation of Les Fees, a little-known story that first appeared in Perrault's Histoires 1697, but the edition reproduced here was originally printed by T. Brandard, Birmingham. The second booklet Scripture Histories retells eight stories from both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. This booklet was printed by F. Houlston and Son, Wellington. The woodcuts in this booklet are appropriate to the texts. The third chapbook was published by John Golby Rusher, Banbury, who opened a printing office in 1808. Jack and Jill, and Old Dame Gill begins with a traditional English rhyme, dating perhaps from the early 17th century. The second verse is more recent, and the further 13 stanzas, found in many early 19th-century chapbooks, were added by an anonymous hand. The woodcuts were designed by George Cruikshank and then engraved by A. R. Branston. Jack and Jill is folded uncut, as originally printed. In 1986, author Jack Egan and photographer John Peel collaborated on a book of David Campbell's country poems - but never published. Peel has now assembled some of the originally selected poems and photographs, and added more photographs that evoke Campbell's haunting poetry. Campbell (1915 - 1979) was a decorated RAAF pilot during WW2, before taking over Wells Station, his family's pastoral property north of Canberra. The traditional English children's rhyme 'Who Killed Cock Robin?' was first adapted for Australian children over 100 years ago by William Alexander Cawthorne, in about 1870 in Adelaide. This book is thought to be one of the earliest children's picture books written and printed and published in Australia. The revised illustrations in this modern edition strive to amalgamate the many images of Australia today. Aboriginal and primitive motifs have been painted in contemporary colours to reflect the Australian landscape, sea, sun and sky. For the sake of clarity a few minor changes have been made to the verse text, but, basically, it remains the same as when it was first written. (The inaugural publication of Margaret Hamilton Books.
