He came, he saw, he lectured (on Mrs Gaskell and Jane Austen) - and a few hours later he was found violently and mysteriously dead. Who could have committed the crime? Inspector Royle has to find the killer. The book is a very funny send-up of university life 'down under'. The author spent six years at an Australian university, which he says has a passing resemblance to Drummondale through the staff are completely distinct. He enjoyed his stay in Australia, and met his Australian wife there. ISBN/ASIN: 0002311984. Our Book No: 40857. $80 AUD.

Baxter of the 1822 muster, which provides an unequalled record of all settlers (free settlers and convicts) in New South Wales at the end of the first generation of European settlement. Includes the occupation of each settler, family groupings, and settlers to which individual convicts were assigned. The year 1822 saw the end of an era, with the departure of Major-General Lachlan Macquarie, the longest serving Governor of the colony. The muster provides confirmation of, or sometimes the only reference to, other relationships as well. Details of husbands, wives, sons and daughters are frequently recorded - however, the muster also includes references to grandchildren, nephews and nieces, brothers and sisters and even adopted children. This book will be a good reference for anyone with an interest in Australian history and genealogy. First edition stated. ISBN/ASIN: 0949032085. Our Book No: 40633. $80 AUD.

Subtitle: With an Introduction by Felipe Fernandez-Armesto and essays by Martin Davies on Pere Posa, the printing of the Spanish Columbus Letter at Barcelona in 1493, Anthony Payne and Katherine Spears on Quaritch, the Spanish Columbus Letter and America 1890 - 1892. Edited by Anthony Payne. Includes a colour facsimile of the original letter in the centre pages. The Columbus Letter that London bookseller Bernard Quaritch bought in 1890 was the most valuable item of printed Americana to ever appear on the market. No other copy of this, the earliest edition - a folio printed in Spanish at Barcelona in 1493 - is known. Quaritch and his assistant Michael Kerney originally published The Spanish Letter of Columbus in 1981 (now reprinted), being the first authoritative study of the document. But, as Felipe Fernandez-Armesto recounts in his introduction (new to this reprint), it nearly got dismissed as a forgery, in era of many forgeries. Quaritch's Letter did contain some errors, mostly the result of assumptions common at the time or deficiencies of knowledge unremedied until later. It demonstrated, correctly, that the folio in question was printed at Barcelona in 1493 and that all other known editions of the Columbus Letter followed it. This was a service to his firm and to the Lenox Library (now part of the New York Public Library), which purchased the item. This new edition also includes an account of the printing of the original Spanish Columbus Letter in 1493 and, drawing on materials surviving in the Quaritch Archive, the story of how Quaritch, and his son Alfred, marketed it in America. (Limited facsimile edition of 500 copies.) ISBN/ASIN: 0955085225. Our Book No: 15832. $80 AUD.

Contains all four plates (rarely found). Review: "This is an Australian love story pure and simple. A young Queenslander falls in love with a fascinating girl from town but is jilted in favour of a titled man with money. He becomes a misogynist of the deepest dye, and buries himself in a veritable wilderness called Rocky Section — miles from anywhere. One day he discovers a girl near his place who has evidently lost her way and fainted from sheer exhaustion. He takes her to his hut and revives her, only to find that she has lost her memory and cannot tell where she comes from. He hates women with a bitter hatred, but is on the horns of a dilemma. What happens? "The way out" is most interesting, but you must read it for yourself." (Bookseller stamp: J. H. Lundager, My Morgan.). Our Book No: 16426. $150 AUD.

Lively enthusiasm and careful scholarship have combined to produce a valuable and truly pioneering work on a subject hitherto clouded by speculation and optimistic attribution. More broadly, the spare-time production by Thomas Bewick of his celebrated natural histories was supported by the vigorous activity of a general engraving business involving Bewick, his partner Ralph Beilby and numerous apprentices. The workshop's surviving records are unique in their diversity and quantity, revealing a vast range of work, from banknotes and inscriptions on silver, to the making of type punches and bottle moulds. These records have been used in the study of engraved silver, pottery transfers and the preparatory studies for Bewick's wood engravings. Very fully illustrated, with over 300 examples reproduced, and its wealth of biographical information on the owners of the bookplates represents an important contribution to the social history of the north of England.
