This book by the professor of linguistics, Australian National University (ANU), is a followup to his previous book: The Dyirbal Language of North Queensland. Yidin is a northern neighbour of the Dyirbal in the Cairns region of Queensland. It is also a dying language, but is grammatically distinct. The syntax is of a mixed ergative type that cannot be easily accommodated in standard linguistic theory. He explains the grammar in terms of configurations rather than the more usual tree diagrams. He includes a vocabulary and three sample texts, two of traditional myths, and one of an autobiographical account of interaction with early missionaries. (No 19 in this series.). This is a very special book with the stories from the Kukatja (Gugadja) people, who have given permission for Gracie, Lucy and Joe to tell their stories, which are written in English and Kukatja. The stories were told to Gracie in Kukatja and English, while she was visiting Lucy and Joe at Noonkanbah, about halfway between Wirrumanu (Balgo) and Broome,at Christmas 1987. This children’s picture book for older children is also suitable as an art book for adults. The main story is called: The Roughtail Lizard Dreaming.
