2. Arnold, Catharine (2015). Globe: Life in Shakespeare's London. London: Simon & Schuster. 312 pp. Hardback small octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), minor edgewear. William Shakespeare, the greatest English dramatist, was inextricably linked with the history of London. Together, the great writer and the great city came of age and confronted triumph and tragedy. Triumph came when his company, the Chamberlain's Men, opened the Globe playhouse on Bankside in 1599, under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I. But London struggled against the ever-present threat of riots, rebellions and outbreaks of plague. The author, Catharine Arnold, tells how acting came of age. For example, we learn about James Burbage, founder of the original theatre in Shoreditch, and the terrible night in 1613 when the theatre caught fire during a performance of King Henry VIII. Rebuilt, the Globe continued to stand until 1642 when it was destroyed on the orders of Oliver Cromwell. And finally we learn how 300 years later, the Globe opened once more upon the Bankside, rising like a phoenix from the flames. ISBN/ASIN: 9781471125690. Our Book No: 18480. $25 AUD.

80. Plimer, Ian (2009). Heaven and Earth: Global Warming, the Missing Science (Reprint ed). Ballan, VIC: Connor Court Publishing. 504 pp. Paperback small thick octavo, very good condition, many figures & graphs, minor edgewear. Ian Plimer, an Australian mining geologist and former professor of earth sciences, provides a very skeptical critique of the science supporting human-induced climate change. Melbourne: Scribe Publications. 326 pp. Paperback octavo, very good condition, black & white photos centre spread, minor edgewear, cover photo differs from stock photo. Niki Savva, a political columnist for 'The Australian’, reveals the ruinous behaviour of former prime minister Tony Abbott and his chief of staff, Peta Credlin. Based on her unrivalled access to their colleagues, and devastating first-person accounts of what went on behind the scenes. Abbott ignored all the warnings, from beginning to end - the public ones, the private ones, from his friends, his colleagues, the media. His colleagues were not being disloyal. They did not feel they had betrayed him, they believed he had betrayed them. Their motives were honourable. They didn't want him to fail, they wanted the government to succeed, and they wanted the Coalition re-elected. Abbott and Credlin had played it harder and rougher than anybody else to get where they wanted to be. But they proved incapable of managing their own office, much less the government.
