Heavy (1.0 Kg), and extra postage may be requested to destinations outside Australia. In this award-winning and admired book, Tim Bonyhady challenges the belief that Australia’s colonial settlers despised their environment and were blind to their own destructiveness. The first environmental laws were proclaimed as early as 1788. Many colonists not only found delight in their surroundings but were happy to look after them. Many of the present concerns such as looking after endangered species, protecting forests, maintaining public rights over the foreshore, and even the threat of climate change, were important issues with the first white settlers. The work of many of Australia's finest painters is the main feature of his story. He also draws upon many literary sources to show that concern for our environment is not new, but goes deep into the Australian past. ISBN/ASIN: 0522850537. Our Book No: 41417. $40 AUD.

From the social space of a cybercafe to cities in India, the UK and South Africa among others, this book features ethnographic studies that provide new ways of looking at the concepts of 'locality' and 'site'. The nature of 'locality' itself is problematic for both participants and fieldworkers: it must now be maintained and represented in relation to widening and fragmenting social frames and networks. Such developments have raised questions concerning the nature of ethnographic presence and scales of comparison. Rather than taking key fieldwork processes such as globalization and mobility for granted, anthropologists are well-placed to examine and critique the totalizing assumptions behind the notions of 'locality' and 'site’. The editors are British academic anthropologists. ISBN/ASIN: 1845204034. Our Book No: 24537. $20 AUD.

74. Goode, Erich (2000). Paranormal Beliefs: A Sociological Introduction. Prospect Heights, IL: Waveland Press, Inc. 310 pp. Paperback octavo, very good plus condition, minor edgewear, owner's two rubber stamps front endpapers. Despite the continued and growing popularity of such phenomena as angels, witches, extrasensory perception, psychics, astrology, foretelling the future, living past lives, ghosts, and communicating with the dead, such paranormal beliefs have received little scrutiny from sociologists. Who believes in them? Why? And with what consequences? A paranormal belief system is generated as a result of cultural, social, and social-psychological forces. It is linked with social institutions in identifiable ways and has identifiable consequences. According to Erich Goode, the explication of how paranormal beliefs are accepted or rejected yields richer understanding of social structures and dynamics. Accepting one or more of the beliefs - or accepting a cosmology that rules them out of the realm of the possible - tells us a great deal about the believers and disbelievers as well as the society in which they live. This compelling, well-documented work presents a much-needed sociological examination of the role paranormal beliefs play in our society. The author is a sociologist at the State University of New York. (Rubber stamp of Harvey J. Irwin, Australian academic parapsychologist.). ISBN/ASIN: 1577660765. Our Book No: 18311. $50 AUD.
