John Batman (1801 - 1839) was an Australian entrepreneur who settled in Van Diemen's Land in the 1820s, and later he explored the Port Phillip Bay area on the Australian mainland with a view to establishing a new settlement there (which later became the city of Melbourne). The treaty he negotiated with local Aborigines in 1835 to acquire land was controversial, as he offered tools, blankets and food in exchange for thousands of hectares of land. This account by John Batman is reprinted from The Journal of Australasia, July and August 1856, published by George Slater in Melbourne. Raised in Sydney in September 1914, it became part of the 2nd Light Horse Brigade. Sailing from Sydney in December 1914, the regiment disembarked in Egypt in February 1915. The light horse was unsuitable for initial operations at Gallipoli, but they were later deployed without their horses to reinforce the infantry. Stephan Williams provides a short biography of William Francis King who was born in England in 1807. He left England and came to Australia in 1829. He was known as The Flying Pieman because of his unusual activities at Circular Quay, where he would offer his pies to the passengers as they boarded the Parramatta steamer. Those he did not sell he would carry out to Parramatta, a distance of 18 miles, and offer to the same passengers as they disembarked. He always dressed in colourful clothes with white stockings and stout shoes on his feet, tight red knee-breeches, open white shirt, blue jacket and a top hat, from which multi-coloured streamers trailed. He carried a staff with more streamers attached. He died in 1873. (Third edition, fully revised). Limited edition of 750 copies.
